At a glance

The Southern African region has seen significant digital transformation successes, particularly in South Africa, which boasts the highest internet penetration on the continent and serves as a regional hub for data centers, holding over two-thirds of Africa’s data center capacity. Despite these advancements, the region faces challenges such as infrastructure deficiencies, economic constraints, skill gaps, regulatory issues, cybersecurity concerns, and social and cultural barriers. To address these challenges, GIZ has established the Digital Transformation Center (DTC) in South Africa.

Our approach

The Digital Transformation Center (DTC) in South Africa primarily focuses on the Green Digital Transformation module. The DTC builds upon the activities of GIZ’s Climate Support Programme in South Africa by utilizing  digital transformation to enhance climate action initiatives (mitigation, adaptation, climate services, etc) . Based on the needs and requirements of DFFE. In addition to the Green Digital Transformation module, the DTC will also support other modules, including Digital Skills, Digital Economy, Women in Tech, and Innovation Promotion. The DTC in South Africa aspires to expand its activities to support and collaborate with other countries in the Southern African region.

  • Green Digital Transformation: The DTC will explore and execute digital demonstration and operational projects aimed at achieving local climate transition objectives, in partnership with key stakeholders within the green digital transformation ecosystem. The DTC will also facilitate the creation of a dependable, secure, and interoperable data infrastructure to underpin the design and implementation of climate action initiatives and to promote informed policymaking.
  • Digital skills and Women in Tech: The DTC will undertake capacity development initiatives, such as training and workshops, to enhance stakeholders’ abilities to utilise digital technologies for climate action. Additionally, the DTC will implement programs designed to empower women and marginalized groups to actively participate in the digital sphere, thereby promoting inclusive digital growth.
