About the project

This informational tool on the value of micro-credentials is a result of the research sprint funded by the Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and implemented via the political initiative Gig Economy and the Sector Project Technical and Vocational Education and Training of GIZ. The research sprint was conducted by the experts at Skills Consulting Group.

Micro-credentials present an alternative to traditional qualifications and hence are increasingly popular in the informal digital learning space. This research is aimed at discovering their relevance for adult learners who may join the labour market as platform-based gig workers or TVET trainees, and the role they can play in finding better work in the digital economy in the global south. The enquiry focused on India, Kenya, Mexico, and Vietnam and hence examples from these countries have been shared on this page.
