More than 400,000 Filipinos are now working for digital labor platforms – attracted by a supposedly secure job and stable wages. In a recent report, the Oxford Internet Institute shed light on how fair working conditions really are on these platforms. On a 10-point scale, the report evaluates aspects such as pay, working conditions, contracts, or treatment by management.
The results are clear: only four of the nine platforms analyzed manage to score any points at all on the scale. Not a single platform pays the legally required minimum wage.
Since there is no social security for the population in the Philippines from the state side, gig workers in such precarious working conditions are exposed to an increased risk.
