Digital Impact Alliance (DIAL)

At a glance

The Digital Impact Alliance is committed to promoting digital inclusion in an effort to contribute to the UN sustainability goals. DIAL’s activities are focussed on simplifying digital technologies, developing new markets and accelerating the provision of digital services.

In action

DIAL is part of the United Nations Foundation. The Alliance is staffed by a global team and headed by a committee of leading entrepreneurs, technologists and development experts from emerging countries. This leadership puts DIAL in a unique position to act as a neutral intermediary that brings together the government, industry and other development actors in order to promote new solutions to old problems. DIAL developed the digital principles that GIZ and the KfW adopted in 2019.

The Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), Estonia, ITU and DIAL are developing a reference model, a “common digital SDG platform” as a digital public good (DPG), that is predominantly comprised of standards-based, secure, interoperable and reusable building blocks that are available to all government authorities to enable the cost-effective, accelerated and integrated development and use of their digital services and applications, especially in environments with few resources.
