In action

Smartphones and algorithms can make an important contribution to stopping the spread of the coronavirus pandemic during a lockdown. In the fight against the coronavirus, the Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) is supporting a software that was originally developed by the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research in 2014 in response to the Ebola outbreak in West Africa. The tool is currently being rolled-out in Nigeria and Ghana. At the moment, GIZ is working on its nation-wide implementation in other African partner countries.

SORMAS – early warning of epidemics via software

The open-source software captures real-time disease control data to enable surveillance, early detection and containment of infectious outbreaks such as Ebola, measles, avian flu and cholera.
